Course of Action
A detailed SEO website audit revealed several issues common in ecommerce sites and cannabis related sites. After analyzing data from Google analytics, search console and various SEO tools we prioritized helping the site recover from the recent penalty first. One thing we commonly see in competitive SEO niches like Marijuana and CBD sites is negative SEO. Negative SEO is when a competitor purposely sabotages your rankings, usually by pointing spammy links to your site. These links are usually hidden from all popular SEO tools for obvious reasons. We used our Agency level access to a machine learning algorithm to identify and remove these toxic links.
Technical SEO
After removing these Links our dev team started by fixing all the technical issues to improve site structure and crawlability as well as site speed. On-page issues like broken links are very common in e-commerce sites and hurt rankings and user experience. If your site is slow and has lots of 404 errors and links going nowhere, Google’s search engine crawlers are unable to properly scan or index your site which will cause them to devalue your site. More importantly it will cause a poor user experience which will hurt your conversions and bottom line.
Content Strategy and keyword research
All great cannabis SEO campaigns start with great content. We developed an effective content strategy after some extensive market and keyword research as well as learning more about the client’s business. We targeted a mix of commercial and informational high traffic keywords designed to funnel users to the client’s product pages. Keywords focusing on topics like, cannabis strains, products and educational content. Informational content is great because it improves the websites overall topical authority and creates linkable assets as well as overall trust in the search engines.
